Abyssal brutes - hulking, horned, dragging iron - have come up onto the north Scar round the pit and the glass plateaus. Warden Sable wants six of them down before they reach the camp.

“On my last walk along the rim I counted the brutes on the north Scar - round the pit, by the glass plateaus, one as far east as the gate. Every morning there is another.”
“They are slow, and they hit like a falling wall. Six of them. The boots are from the Order's stores - you will be doing a lot of walking.”
