In the barrow downs west of the crossroads the old kings' guard has walked out of the mounds in its armour - bone knights with maces and shields. Put eight of them back in the ground.

“Before the necropolis, the kings of the fen were buried in mounds to the west - each with his guard around him, in armour, with his mace in his hand. A ring of standing stones round the greatest of them.”
“The guard has come out. They still keep formation, still carry their shields. Eight of them, and I will pray over the mounds so they stay closed.”
